For the past year our negotiations with the City have been a tough go as we’ve gone round after round on our contract. But since we brought a mediator in, things are finally moving ahead and the final wrinkles are being ironed out. Soon members of AFSCME 3090 should have a tentative agreement to vote on.

There are only a few points of contention left at the Coalition of LA City Unions’ bargaining table and with the push to get the unit tables done, I foresee an end to all this very soon. With that said, we will continue to fight against takeaways. We will make sure the entire process goes through smoothly and be as transparent as possible so members can make an informed decision.

Change is coming on our executive board as we will bid farewell at the end of her term in October to Jeanette Argentin, South Bay Coordinator. Jeanette has retired from the city and recently graduated with a Master’s Degree in Humanities from Mount Saint Mary’s. Wow! So we say double congratulations to Jeanette. We thank her for many years of dedication and hard work on behalf of Local 3090 and wish her all the best in her retirement. Other changes happening - Business Representative Angela Kent has been reassigned to other AFSCME Locals in Council 36 and we welcome Teresa Sanchez to Local 3090.

The battle for a minimum wage won a huge victory when the Los Angeles City Council voted to raise the minimum wage in our city to $15 an hour by 2020. Los Angeles is the largest city in the country to enact such a wage increase and we should be proud of the efforts of all of our members and the Raise the Wage campaign. It’s a much needed change that will lift hundreds of thousands of Angelenos out of poverty!

Oral Interview Training is scheduled for Saturday, June 6 at 12:30 p.m. for those who took any of the promotional examinations recently given or planning to in the near future. It’s not too late to sign up nor is it too early to prepare as the last three examinations will be scored based on 100% oral interview. Please call Bernice to RSVP at 213-487-9887 ext 340.

Our next membership meeting is Saturday, June 6 at 10 a.m. We hope you will join us for the latest news from the union. Please bring your questions and concerns.

See you there!

In solidarity,
Alice Goff, President, AFSCME 3090
