Sisters & Brothers,

Before continuing with my regular monthly message, I want to take a moment and offer my condolences to everyone affected by yesterday's tragedy in Las Vegas. The first responders to situations such as these are our Sisters and Brothers in service, and our thoughts and prayers are with all of the victims and their families in this most difficult time.

We've had some good news on a couple of complicated fronts come out of both the Building & Safety and Library departments. The two situations are resulting in well-earned bonuses for employees.

At Building & Safety, there are times when there are not enough cashiers on hand to handle the workload, especially during breaks. So, it has been a practice for administrative clerks to fill in for cashiers when needed, and when they do so, they receive a bonus. More recently, B&S has been asking accounting clerks to also fill in for cashiers, and now those employees are also receiving the same bonus.

It was management who came to us to address this situation.

As for the libraries, the shifts at the circulation desks have always been all over the place. It makes it difficult for employees to schedule their lives when they don't know what their shifts are going to be, and that results in it being difficult to hire and retain folks in these positions. So, bonuses have also been attached to these positions, and this was also initiated by management.

I'm pleased to see progress on these issues, and that management was proactive, as the union makes it a priority to make sure our members are compensated fairly. Management's willingness to approach us can be, at least in part, attributed to our solidarity. Stronger together!

Open Enrollment for health care benefits is from Oct. 1 to Oct. 31. You should have already received an email about the options available and what you need to do to move ahead. Click here for more info and check out this series of onsite and web-based seminars  designed to help you make the best choices for you and your family. Also, there's a series of onsite health screenings and flu shots available. Click here for more info. New users enter signup code LIVEwell, and all Keeping LAwell employee members are eligible.  And don't forget about your dental health and our available vision care options.

Speaking of good health, October is also Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It seems like we all know someone who has been affected by this disease, or we are that someone. There are members reading this who know the pain and heartache of losing someone to breast cancer, or have shown the courage it takes to battle and be a survivor. I encourage you to get screened, or to encourage a loved one – a wife, a sister, a mother – to get screened. More resources are available here.

I'll see you at the next membership meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 4. The meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. and dinner will be provided.
