Hello 3090 members, it’s hard to believe, but it’s time to vote – again! Municipal city elections are coming up on Tuesday, March 7, just a few weeks away. Yes, we did just have an election, with the consequences of that catastrophic election becoming clearer by the day. But while we may not be able to control what goes on in Washington, D.C., we can make our voices heard in the cities we live in, in Los Angeles city and throughout the County. Your vote matters! To help you sort through the candidates and issues, AFSCME District Council 36 has put together a voter guide for our members. We hope you check it out.

How do we come up with our endorsed candidates list? We get asked that all the time. District Council 36 holds candidate forums, like we did last month, where candidates come and talk to us about issues and answer members’ questions, face to face. Then, taking into account the recommendation of rank-and-file members, Local 3090 leadership and Council 36 executive board votes to endorse candidates and various issues. The results are printed in our voter guide for your use to consider when you cast your own ballot. With the Trump administration making moves daily that send shivers down our collective spine, we have to ensure that local leadership is fighting for the wellbeing of our members. A strong union voice at the ballot box is a strong L.A. Unfortunately, Los Angeles has a poor track record for turnout at local elections. Let’s change that this year.

Tuesday, March 7 – VOTE!

On that same note, the AFSCME People program is another way for you to help us fight for our rights as union members. AFSCME People is our union’s political action fund and it allows us to take an active role in getting officials elected and support or fight against issues and measures which will back working families. We’ve knocked on doors in states as far away as Wisconsin – a state that has been ravaged by anti-union attacks – and it allows us to do the same right here in California. Click here to find out more and how to get involved.

To encourage more participation by members, your Executive Board recently approved an incentive program for any AFSCME 3090 members who bring others to our monthly membership meetings! Members who bring members will receive gift cards of $10 - $20 (amount depends on how many members you get to attend). I encourage you to invite some new faces and bring them with you to the meeting.

As an added incentive, if you bring your green AFSCME membership card to the meeting and show it when asked, you will be entered in a drawing for a prize! Last month we gave away a Starbucks gift certificate and a mug; what will it be for March? You must be present to win!

Our next membership meeting is on a Saturday, March 4 at 10 a.m. We will provide breakfast and all the latest news from Local 3090. Come, ask questions and participate. Remember…the Union is YOU! Hope to see you there!

In solidarity,
Carmen Hayes-Walker
