One Year in Office
Welcome to FALL everyone! It’s strange to think that one year of my current two-year term as your president is already over.
Along with our PLAC Chair Derek Bryson and Treasurer Rickk Montoya, I attended the 2023 AFSCME PEOPLE California conference in San Diego. We were able to meet a few of the U.S. Senate candidates for California and listen to their stance on Labor and where it fits into their agenda. It was a great learning experience and I look forward to the next one.
Coalition negotiations are ongoing. We meet with the CAO’s office each Friday. I promise to advise you of any important matters when they arise.
We continue to visit a minimum of two members’ locations per month. If you would like us to visit your worksite, send me an email and we can schedule a visit.
I have been actively involved with the FIX LA project. Below are a few of the priorities we plan to accomplish:
- Fully staff the LA Housing Department.
- Create 10,000 affordable/sustainable housing units.
- Reignite the “City Worker Next Door” program.
I want to invite all of you to join our membership meetings. While my message contains vital information, the membership meetings detail what your union has been doing and what we will be doing moving forward. You are welcome to join either by ZOOM or in person at the Vernon office. Please check our website for information on our next general membership meeting on November 4th. Get involved. We need you!
I want to thank each of you for allowing me to be your president for the last year. It has been my great pleasure and one I don’t take lightly. I do what I do for each of you. I want to be accessible and as transparent about my work as I can be. You each trusted me with your vote one year ago, and I want you to know it has been the best year of my 20 years working for the city.
Wishing you and yours a very Happy Thanksgiving,
Larry Gates
President
